The Mandarin’s face is such an interesting combination of colors, lines, materials and textures.  I barely noticed the beak at first, but there is one texture in particular that draws me fascination.  But before I get to that, I think it’s the combination of colors that really captivate most people with the creature.  It’s obviously natures way of drawing attention itself amongst it’s own species, and it pretty obvious that it works across multiple species, as it attracted both the photographer, and myself.  You do have to wonder, how many trial and error attempts mother nature had to go through before settling on this particular color palette.  Whatever they were, it seems to have settled with a winner.  Or, perhaps just another step in a still evolving creature.

But, let’s get back to the little thing that kind of creeps me out about this picture.  It’s the brownish wet features that cover the Mandarins neck.  I just want to reach out and touch them.  I know they’re likely all soft and malleable, but for some strange reason I want them to be crusty and brittle to the touch.  So if I did reach out to touch them, they would sort of just splinter, crumble and break away.  Not that I mean any harm to the animal, it’s just a strange feeling I have.  I think it goes back to when I was just a child and either myself or my brother banged our foreheads on the concrete steps of our home.  I know it’s a made up memory on my part, but I’ve always imaged the head would to be a perfectly square hole.  When the skin is peeled back, it reveals a criss cross of those same crunchy, brittle squares that I imagine the Mandarins neck to feel like.  So that if you pushed your finger through the wound, the brittle dry squares would crumble like wafer cookies.  Weird huh?

But, it’s all those features that really draw me into the photograph.  Especially the neck thing.  The neck captures my gaze so much, that I barely noticed the bright red of the beak.  Now that’s unusual, given that red is normally such a bright vibrant color, that it would draw your eye right away.  But, it doesn’t in this case.  It’s those dull brown neck feathers … ewwwww!

So, on to a few more pleasant things this picture makes me think of.  Since it’s a Mandarin Duck, I do have to think about Chinese food.  Only because, there happens to be a Mandarin Duck Restaurant here in town.  It is one of my favorite places to go and eat.  Not that I get there as often as I would like to, but that just seems to go with my lifestyle these days.  I also must admit to liking images that are anywhere near the water.  The lake or ocean is one of my favorite places to be.  Not just because of the wildlife you find there, but because it has such a calming, peaceful and inspiring feeling for me.  I don’t know quite how to explain the feeling I get when I get closer to the water, but it’s just always there.  Makes me a little jealous, that I’m not a Mandarin Duck
